It is certainly edgy

Lenovos latest laptop the ThinkPad Edge it is a masterpiece in quality, looks, technology and functionality. I was never a big fan of Lenovos design but with this laptop they changed how we will see laptops in the future. I am saying all this because Lenovo managed to fit in a quite small laptop a powerful Core2Duo CPU, a multitouch trackpad best ever in a non Apple laptop. The keyboard is also a premium managing this time to beat all keyboards on the market. The keys are raised similar to the MacBooks keyboard but they are not straight in the top but concave which make it very easy to type on.

The only problem for some is the lack of an optical drive but for me is not an issue because we start to go for other storage media in this time period. The bottom line is that the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge is a great value for money, I recommend it to a business user in general, but if you want the complete package, meaning an optical drive included, keep searching because you will find the perfect laptop for you, but I will look no further.

Best of CES 2010

Like I said today I will write about my favorite product of CES 2010.

Without any more delays, my favorite product is the Casio Exilim EX FH-100.

It is my favorite because it does what no other camera at it's price does. The video capture mode of 1000 fps blew me away, the beautiful design blew me away, it is kind of retro and modern in the same time. The fact that if I want a camera that shoots great photos and still can impress friends and myself with the slowmotion movies and it makes me choose this camera above all others, makes this one the best product I have seen from CES. There were good camcorders, some resonable pocketcams, but no one came close to realising what this camere does.

So to end this post, if you want a camera in this price range ar even a more expensive one, choose this one. You will be the envy of everyone.

Best of CES 2010 - 9 January

For this post I searched for some time to find a proper product that I would like to use. So after some searching I found the Casio Exilim EX-FH100 camera. This camera has a great design, great 10x optical zoom and a great price of 349 US dollars. For this kind of camera it is very cheap. I say this kind of camera because it can shoot movies at 1000 fps. Beside being a great compact camera that takes great photos and movies, this feature makes it desirable for anyone who wants a good camera, I am sure people will choose this camera over other cameras that have the same price but lacks this feature of taking 1000 fps movies.

I love this camera and I can't wait to see whit my own eyes what it can do.

Tomorrow I will post my favorite product from CES and after that if I will see something interesting I will write about it.

Best of CES 2010 - 8 January

After looking all day for products that will delight my eyes I found this Panasonic Full HD 3D camcorder that will not only delight my eyes but many more people. This camcorder is indeed revolutionary. It is revolutuinary not only because it is a 3D camcorder but because it is made for consumers. Like someone said, now you can film your kids playing soccer in 3D and you can make an Avatar like movie in your back garden. There is not so much I can say about the camera at this point, I bealieve the quality will be great being full HD, the price will be higher then the most normal camcorders but it will be worth it.
The camcorder will be available in this fall and I can't wait to see some samples on the new 3D TVs.

Best of CES 2010 - 7 January

So as I said in my previous post today I will tell you my favourite product that appeared at CES this year on the first day of CES. So my favourite product is the PopBox. The PopBox is a new media streamer from Syabas, the sama company that made the Popcorn Hour C-200. ThePopBox is great for streaming internet media content in HD quality such as: Movies, Music, Photos, from the internet and it even has 2 USB ports for connecting Hard Drives and it supports a great amount of formats. It's kind of a VLC media player plus more. It also has a lot of connections like of course HDMI, USB, component video and audio, optical, SD slot, ethernet and the box will come soon with Wireless N conenction. The interface is very easy to use, the price is lower that I expected from a product like this it is only 125 US dollars and the wireless version will cost 145 US dollars (I will choose the wireless version if I will buy it).

The product is simple yet beautiful it is like a normal box with straight edges like most other media streamers, you can even put the HDDs on top of the box and it is not like the crooked Boxee, which will ocupy it's space and you will not be able to put something on it to minimize the space occupied.

So in the end, the PopBox is a great product and I am sure it will have a huge success.

Now for the products that i didn't like: Still no 3D TV that doesn't require glasses, tablet netbooks of some sort who are slugish even with 4 GB of ram, expensive e-readers with no 3G, pocketable camcorders who are still doing what they suppose to tho and nothing more or better.

So stay tuned for the next blog post to find out my favourite product of January 8.

P.S.: I wrote this post so late so that I will browse through all the products announced on 7 of January and because of the time difference. So my next post will be on January 9 for the products announced in January 8 and so on.

2010 E-Wishes

2010 came, and CES is really close but what are my e-wishes for this year.

By e-wishes I mean gadgets, gizmos, electronics that I want this year to appear in the hands of consumers, not mine necessarily.
Firstly I will make a top 10 comment on them and then I will write about my future posts.

10. Sixteen-core processor on one chip - Sounds futuristic but I am sure the technology is there, maybe is not cost effective yet, but I hope it will have a positive effect on servers and virtual hosting. This way less numbers of servers will be used and still making the same amount of work with less energy.

9. Wireless N devices, can be ofcourse wireless routers, smartphones, laptops, Blu-Ray players, even HD radios. We all need faster speed when we are near a public hotspot. This will be achieved but will it be at an oaffordable price?

8. Tablet-PCs. I searched the internet but I couldn't find enough tablets. I don't know why but they are not too popular. With Windows 7 here and it's multitouch usage I hope this year will bring more tablet PC's on the market to make computing easier and more fun.

7. 3D TV. I want a 3D TV that I can watch without special glasses but I guess this won't come to early. They may be expensive and rare but I still want one model to appear this year to make other manufacturers to bring them out at least next year.

6. Greater resolution smartphones. The 800x480 resoultion is nice but HD capable smartphone with HD resolution will make watching videos, podcasts and the overall software design much nicer. This makes me think why Microsoft doesn't make a Zune phone.

5. Color E-reader. I know I am not the only one who wishes this, maybe everyone who owns an e-reader wishes the pictures, internet sites, and the overall software interface would look great in color. I think that's why the Nook has so much success. A little color goes a long way.

4. Much cheaper and bigger capacity SSD drives. They can lower the prices but don't want to yet, in my opinion, until they have a bigger market they can not afford lowering the price.

3. OLED TVs. The are really slim, the colors are fantastic but I think the technology is not there yet to create plasma sized TVs. But a dorm room sized TV won't hurt.

2. Slim tower gaming destops. A lot of power in a slim tower (it rhymes :)), is possible if you have great airflow or liquid cooling. And think of all the participants of a lanparty, with the smile on their face when the don't have to carry around a more expensice and lower spec laptop.

1. Really affordable DSLR. I want one but can not afford it, I have to buy a compact and change the firmware to have a camera a little more close to a DSLR but still not enough.

Bonus places - Where will a reliable printer will appear and when RIM will release a proper browser for it's smartphones.

Like I said now I will tell you what my plans are for the next blogposts.

From 7 until 10 of January I will post everyday my opinions about my one favourite thing that was anounced that day and on 11 or 12 I will present my overall favourite from those posts with more opinions and examples why I chosed it.

So I hope it will be a great CES and maybe some of my e-wishes will come true in these days.

Windows 7 - Ubuntu Rant

So let me start by saying that today is the one week anniversary of Windows 7 and the release of Ubuntu 9.10. Also today is the 50th anniversary of Asterix and Obelix, the cartoon that I grew up with, but at this age technology entertains me.
What can I say about Windows 7 after months of using it. It is more than I expected in so many ways but there are still little things that are very annoing and wish that Microsoft will fix them soon. On the positive side is the speed increase, I think it is faster than XP, it is a looker and it is easier to find the files, programs or functions of the OS. The bad part for me is how long it takes to minimize the windows opened, without going to the minimize button, and I really wish there was an Expose function in Windows just like in Mac OS. Sometimes i find myself going to a corner to show all the Windows and guess, nothing happens. And the last issue I have is with the drivers but Microsoft is not repsonable for this so blame it on the hardware manufacturer. But even with this small incoveniences I must say Windows 7 is the best version of Windows I have ever used.

On the other side is a free operating system that does how much is worth.
For some years now I tried to get in the Linux spirit and used many distributions just to find the perfect one for me. When i started using Ubuntu knowing is the best Linux distribution out there I tought I will forget about Windows but every version I tested until 9.10, gave me headaches about everything from installing software to finding usable drivers.
Today, what put the end to it was waiting anxiously to the new release 9.10. I installed it with much entusiasm and and after the installation of course I had to install the Nvidia drivers, when i chose Extra from the Appereance preferences, they didn't install. I went to the manufacturer website with no avail, i used the software installer with the same result, if they wanted me to use terminal to install a stupid driver than I rather use Windows and forget about Ubuntu.

In the end, Windows made a huge leap and reinvented their OS, and Ubuntu has to go a long road until they get it but they won't find me waiting.
