Windows 7 - Ubuntu Rant

So let me start by saying that today is the one week anniversary of Windows 7 and the release of Ubuntu 9.10. Also today is the 50th anniversary of Asterix and Obelix, the cartoon that I grew up with, but at this age technology entertains me.
What can I say about Windows 7 after months of using it. It is more than I expected in so many ways but there are still little things that are very annoing and wish that Microsoft will fix them soon. On the positive side is the speed increase, I think it is faster than XP, it is a looker and it is easier to find the files, programs or functions of the OS. The bad part for me is how long it takes to minimize the windows opened, without going to the minimize button, and I really wish there was an Expose function in Windows just like in Mac OS. Sometimes i find myself going to a corner to show all the Windows and guess, nothing happens. And the last issue I have is with the drivers but Microsoft is not repsonable for this so blame it on the hardware manufacturer. But even with this small incoveniences I must say Windows 7 is the best version of Windows I have ever used.

On the other side is a free operating system that does how much is worth.
For some years now I tried to get in the Linux spirit and used many distributions just to find the perfect one for me. When i started using Ubuntu knowing is the best Linux distribution out there I tought I will forget about Windows but every version I tested until 9.10, gave me headaches about everything from installing software to finding usable drivers.
Today, what put the end to it was waiting anxiously to the new release 9.10. I installed it with much entusiasm and and after the installation of course I had to install the Nvidia drivers, when i chose Extra from the Appereance preferences, they didn't install. I went to the manufacturer website with no avail, i used the software installer with the same result, if they wanted me to use terminal to install a stupid driver than I rather use Windows and forget about Ubuntu.

In the end, Windows made a huge leap and reinvented their OS, and Ubuntu has to go a long road until they get it but they won't find me waiting.

VMPlayer or VMCreator?

For those who don't know, VMware Player is a product for opening pre-made Virtual machines. VMware the company behind VMware Player has a lot of very good free and licensed software for virtualisation, but all the software that created virtual machines had to be bought until two weeks ago when VMware released their third version of their Virtual Machine Player.
What is new in this version is that allows you to create new Virtual machines. Yes, VMware integrated this feature into a free product making this the best free VM software.
Microsoft's Virtual PC, and Sun's VirtualBox are free and good for the most part but VMware to me is the best product for this kind of job.
This version brings a lot of stability, great performance and 3D support, now you can run Windows 7 or Vista with Aero Glass and Linux with all the effects.
What it lacks is Snapshots, that is the ability to save the state of a virtual machines and brin them back to the stable state if something went wrong. But this is a small price to pay for what you get free and you can always create a full back-up of the system with Macrium Reflect, but about this I will talk in a later post.
In conclusion VMware player, exceded my aspectations, and I am glad they decided to integrate the creation of virtual machines in this version.
But I have only have one question, should they change the name to VMware Creator?

Just write!

Hello!

My name is Michael and on my first post I will tell you about writing.
Writing is not as easy as it sounds but in the same time is not that hard.
Anyone can write if he passed through those years of school of course.
If you want to write a blog, some memories or even a full fledged book you just have to remember that if you think to much you decrease the quantity of information you want to transmit.
The best thing to do is start writing without thinking to much, you heard me, put on paper or in your document all the ideas that come to mind. Something good has to come form the tip of your pencil. If somehow you realize that what you wrote is not good to show to others, write some more, but try to let others judge you're work. You will be surprised by the good feedback and criticism that you'll get.
So be smart and don't think to much when it comes to writing, and like a famous writer said "Just write!"
